The main advantages over a blog is no comments to moderate.

The disadvantages are

No comments means less member interaction invited.

Blogging privileges can be delegated, allowing others to add content to your site.

Your choice though: both custom pages and the blog can be turned on or off independently through the admin panel.

Oh yes, in case you have not noticed, you may use HTML or JavaScript.
